To make Plaster teeth:
Help children make their own set of plaster teeth and then work on them as a dentist would. Use one egg carton box to set up six pairs of "teeth" Make liquid plaster of paris using the recipie below and pour it into the egg carton sections, filling to the top. When the plaster hardens completely, turn the mold over and pop the "teeth" out, separating the pairs. Discuss ways dentists scrape and drill teeth to remove plaque and decay. Provide children with tools they can use to care for their teeth, such as toothpicks, and craft sticks (for drills).
To make plaster of paris, pour powdered plaster in to a container less than half full of water. Avoid mixing until enough powder has been added to make a hill under the water's surface and no more can be added. The use a stick to mix well. Continue mixing until a slight film forms on top. HINT: Excessive mixing helps the plaster to set fast (within minutes): too little mixing makes hardening take longer (hours). Do not mix more than can be used in fifteen or twenty minutes. HINT: BE AWARE THAT PLASTER CAN CLOG DRAINS EASLILY AND SHOULD BE KEPT AWAY FROM SINKS, EVEN IN LIQUID FORM. Use a flexible plastic container/or a disposable bowl to mix it and allow residue to dry up. Squeeze the sides to crack and remove plaster that remains or throw the container away.
